Photos

Hello, everyone. I'm Rachell. As you know, I'm in South Korea. And I'm living in the dormitory now, because I'm in GLPS camp. I am really enjoying the camp and dormitory life. I took photos for 7 days. My photos are mainly about my life in the dormitory.

- what we made for Go Ga-heon PA

Last Saturday, It was our last day with our room PA, Go Ga-heon. She was very kind and polite to us for two weeks. So we thought we will miss her and we were sad about her leaving. So we prepared the event for her. We made this (picture) which says "Ms.Go, We will miss you!" And we prepared the rolling paper and the present. She liked it and we were all happy about it. It shows our hard work, so I took the picture. I still hope to meet her again.

 - my friends who are playing with phone

I am living in the dormitory with other students. There are 6 people in our room. And we are all good friends. Our roommates are funny and kind. It's fun to talk and play with them. At first, sometimes we had trouble living together, but now I think we learned to understand each other. I will still miss them after this camp. In this picture, two of my roommates are playing with a phone under the desk.

- My friend in the small room behind the wind-blown curtain

This is my friend, So-Hee, one of my roommates. Almost everyday, it's windy here in Gang won do. So curtains usually flutter. Sometimes, the wind blows very stongly, so the curtains make the space as you can see in the picture. And my friend stayed in that space. If you go in there like her, it's really cool because of the wind. Also, you can find privacy there like her. (I wonder what is she doing there?)

- Friday's delicious breakfast

In the morning, we ate breakfast at 7 to 8 o'clock. Usually, there is rice, Kimchi and other things. You can see bread, orange juice, and cereal everyday for breakfast. I like them all. But sometimes I get a stomachache because of the cereal, so mostly I mainly eat bread, juice and other things. But still I think this camp's meals are very delicious.

- Our arranged shoes

Sometimes Teacher suddenly comes and checks our shoes.  So these days our room members are try hard to arrange shoes very neatly. So few days ago, we got a green card because of our arranged shoes. We were very happy and we will try harder to keep shoes neatly.

- a gigantic moth

On Sunday morning, my friends and I were eating breakfast in the cafeteria. Suddenly, my friend said to me.
"Look! Look! Look at the window!" So I looked at the window and discovered the giant moth. There were many moths on the window. Compared with other normal moths, it was really really gigantic. I was surprised. You can see the normal moth next to this giant moth in the picture. I am curious to know "How can it be so big?"

- The way to the school

All students get out of the dormitory by 8:20 to go to school. Our class go to Choong Mu building for the adviser time. And we have to go over to hill. I like to walk in the morning to go to school like this. because fresh morning air makes me happy.

The life in dormitory was really exciting and fun. I hope to come back and meet friends and teachers again.

Creative writing - A Door of Time

-A Door of Time

Chapter#1
"Sally, come here!" I heard my 2 years older sister Cindy's voice when I was reading my book busily. It was our first day in our new house. I was concentrating on my book. "What? Why?" I asked. And she shouted, "Right now!" I ran to her room, and saw my sister in front of the bookshelf. She said, "Oh, I found something, I want to show you". When I looked at where she was pointing, I said, "Ah, It's a bookshelf. It's pretty." "No, I didn't mean that." she said. She pulled the bookshelf with her finger. And the bookshelf moved! It made a space behind it like a door. "Oh, my god!" She explained, "My pencil fell and rolled to here. And it rolled under this bookshelf, so I pushed this, and it moved. Isn't it interesting?" I was excited. "So what are we going to do with it?" I asked. " Um.....I don't know." she said. "This is surely a time portal that we saw in the movie yesterday! Let's go in. It will be a fun adventure!" But Cindy said, "No, I won't. And I won't let you go in. We will be in trouble." I am not a patient person as my sister is. I begged her "Please, please let's go in."  But it didn't work, so I slowly moved to the door and crawled into it. I don't know why, but I strongly felt like going in. I could hear Cindy's shouting, "No, Don't!" But I ignored her and kept going in with Cindy holding my hand. When we finally got into that door, the door closed behind us.There was a long dark tunnel in front of us. Cindy looked like she was going to cry. "I told you not to go in. It's all your fault!" she said angrily. "Let's find a way to get out of here," I said. I walked and she followed me. We walked and walked through the tunnel without talking.

Chapter#2
When we walked about 20 minutes, I could see a jet of light. Without any words, we ran and ran to reach a light, until we were in a bright world, feeling warm. And there were people! They wore strange suits. And there were merchants selling the goods. I thought I have seen this somewhere. I tried to remember where it was. "Ancient Rome," Cindy said quietly. And I shouted "What? Ancient? How can we be here?" Then I saw many ships waiting for people. I was confused and couldn't understand what was happening. Cindy and I walked and walked. Suddenly, I heard a man's voice. He was a soldier! He ordered us. "Get out of here!! Cleopatra is coming." 'Cleopatra?' I thought. I learned about her in history classes. The soldier yelled, "Get out of here, girls!" Then the beautiful woman came. I knew that she was Cleopatra. "Oh, just let them go," she said. We moved and they were gone. We walked around again. An old man talked to me. " Young lady, are you a Roman?" I responded, "No, sir. We came from Boston, USA. I know it's hard to believe but it's true." And he said, "Oh, I understand. If you want to get out of here, you should get a key which Cleopatra has." "How can we find it?" Cindy asked. "I don't know," The man smiled and when I was going to ask him "How can you understand?" he was gone. Everything seemed like a mystery.

Chapter#3
We had to find Cleopatra. So we asked people and finally found Cleopatra's house. "Just act like traders from different country," Cindy whispered. We carried our bags as if we were carrying goods for trade. There were so many rooms. "Hey, we can't search all these rooms. Dad and mom must be worrying. We should hurry," I said to Cindy. Then I saw Cleopatra going into the room. "Cindy, that room must be Cleopatra's room!" When Cleopatra and the maids all got into the room, we walked carefully towards the room. Fortunately, there was no people in the hall. "Oh, let's hide there," Cindy whispered. So we got under the table in front of Cleopatra's room. We stayed quietly and stayed there very still. And we heard the voice of Cleopatra saying, " I would go and meet Antonius right now." Then we heard the sound of the maids packing for her. They got out of the room and one of the maids locked the door. But before that, Cindy poked her pencil into a crack between the wall and the door, so it wasn't actually locked.

Debate - Cell phones should be banned in school

I was the deputy prime minister in last debate. The prime minister gave first argument, and I gave our second and third arguments. I would like to write my speech of debate here. (only our arguments)    Hello, young ladies and gentlemen. My name is Rachell. I am the deputy prime minister. Our team stongly support the proposition "Cell phones should be banned in school." Let me tell you what I will be doing in this debate. I will rebut the leader of opposition's arguments, rebuild our first argument, and give you our second and third arguments.(I only wrote our second and third arguments.)
Our second argument is that there are possibilities of losing.  If the students put their phones somewhere in school or on the way to the school, it is hard to find them. There are much more possiblities of losing in school, because you may lose it in classroom, on the street, and school buses. You move to other places a lot in school. If students lose the cell phones, they will get in trouble and parents will worry about you if you don't answer by phones. Although, students finally found the cell phones, they should spend much time to find them. And I think it's just waste of time. If you just give it to teacher, you don't have to worry about losing.(The prime minister defined 'banned' as 'teachers take the cell phone in the morning and give it back after school.)
Our third argument is that students can use public phones as the alternative of cell phones. Cell phones are for communication, but students mostly use them for games. But they need cell phones not for games, they need them for call in emergency or others. Public phones are just for communication.  They don't even have function to entertain. So students won't play games and it will be benefits to both students and parents. Public phones can't move, so it won't interrupt your studying, too. Also, you can find public phones easily in school, street, and bus stop.

My movie review(The Wizard of Oz)

My movie review -The Wizard of Oz

Our class watched the movie named "The Wizard of Oz" yesterday. Its genre was fantasy. There were the Scarecrow, the Lion, the Tin Man, Glinda, Toto, and the Wicked Witch of the West. The tornado took Dorothy and Toto to the Great Land of Oz. Dorothy met the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion, who wanted to get a brain, a heart, and courage. They arrived at Emerald City to get what they want from the Wizard of Oz. They all got what they wanted. And Dorothy and Toto came back to the Kansas by ruby shoes.
After watching the movie, I thought about my opinion about the movie. I thought the good thing about movie is that we can learn many things through this movie. I learned bravery from the lion and other characters who saved Dorothy with bravery. I learned cooperation from their team work at the end, and leadership from Dorothy who always helps other team members. But there were also bad things about this movie, too. I couldn't understand the story clearly. I couldn't understand why is the Wizard of Oz in Emerald City? I couldn't understand his story. Also, the ending part (the saving) was too short and simple. I think it's an important part. But the movie didn't describe it in details. I couldn't clearly understand the characteristic of Oz.
I learned two big things through this movie. First one is cooperation. Dorothy and her friends helped each other and finally achieved what they wanted through teamwork. If Dorothy's friends didn't come and help her, she would be in trouble at the witch's castle. Second one is that if you really want something, it will come. All friends of Dorothy and Dorothy wanted something very hopeful, and I think it is one of the reasons how they got what they wanted. If I could change this movie, I would describe the characteristics more clearly. I am on the fence about this movie, because we can learn many things, but we can't clearly understand the story.

30-day Goals

Yesterday, my class and I watched the TED video about 30-day challenges. I was surprised at his challenges and achievements. So I tried to make goals for 30 days. I want to tell you what my goals and plans are.
My first goal is to read three English novels which are more than 200 pages. I will read at least 20 pages a day. I will check how many pages I read everyday. I think I'll be able to do it, because I have finished a English novel which is more than 200 pages in a week before. I think it will help me to improve my reading skill, vocabulary and writing skill. I will read the books in the morning, at night and at the school.
My second goal is to write a 100 pages(12 points) English story. I will think about how to write it for three days. Then I will start writing. I will write at least 4 pages in 12 points a day. I can make it sure by checking how many pages I wrote everyday. I think I'll be able to do it, because the story that I'm going to write isn't much long. And I wrote short stories before for our school's year book. I think writing a story in English is a good way to improve my English, writing skills, and my creativity. I will write a book every morning and night.
My third goal is to take the stairs when I need to get to the 11th and 12th floors in the dormitory. I will take the stairs to get to the 11th and 12th floors for meals or studying. And I will take the stairs to get to my room on the 6th floor. I will check how much I became healthier by climbing mountain Ji-ri on the last day of the 30 days. Maybe I will be healthier that time. So if my efforts work, I will be able to climb it easily. I think I'll be able to do it, because I took stairs to get to the 11th and 12th floors several times before. I have heard that taking stairs instead of elevators is good for our health. I will take the stairs everyday when I go to the 11th and 12th floors.

My History Presentation

History Presentation- Rome's language

I'm Rachell Lim. I am going to tell you about Rome's language. The native language of the Romans was Latin, an Italic language in the Indo- European family. Several forms of Latin existed, and the language evolved over time, finally becoming the Romance language spoken today. The Latin alphabet is based on the old Italic alphabet, which is turn derived from the Greek alphabet.
Initially, older forms of Latin rely little on word orders. But like other Indo- European languages, Latin acquired the arranged word orders.
Although, surviving Latin literature consists almost entirely of Classical Latin, an artificial and polished literary language from the 1st century BC, the actual spoken language of Roman Empire was Vulgar Latin, which differed from Classical Latin in grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
Also, although Latin remained the main written language of the Roman Empire, Greek came to be the language spoken by the well- educated elite. In the eastern half of the Roman Empire, which became the Byzantine Empire, Greek was the main lingua franca as it had been since the time of Alexander the Great, while the Roman goverment and its soldiers mostly used Latin. Eventually, Latin and Greek were both the official written and spoken language of Eastern Roman Empire, while the various dialects of Vulgar Latin used in western Roman Empire evolved into the modern Romance Languages still used today.
Over time, Vulgar Latin evolved and dialectized in different locations, gradually shifting into a number of distinct Romance languages beginning in around the 9th centry. These languages include French, Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish.
When William the conqueror invaded England from Normandy in 1066, he brought with him a number of people who spoke Anglo- Norman French, a Romance language derived from Latin. And the number of Latinate words increased in English through borrowing during this Middle English period. The revival of interest in classical culture led to a great deal of adaptation of words from Classical Latin authors into English. Latin continues to see heavy use in religious, legal, scientific language, and in learning.
